Rabbits are very social, curious creatures, and a way to help your bunny to be more comfortable living with you is to bond with them. How long does it take to bond with your rabbit? As long as you are patient and gentle with them, it should not be long until your rabbit gets used to you and feels comfortable. There are several ways you can try to connect with your rabbit, such as toys, treats, and hiding places. Being gentle with your bunny is the number one key in getting your rabbit comfortable with you.
Â
Routine
Rabbits love routines, so you should give them routines for their feeding schedule, playtime, and training sessions. Having a routine will get them excited for what is coming up next, and when they see you, they will be very happy.Â
Let your rabbit come up to you
When socializing with your rabbit, you should get down to their level: sitting or laying down on the floor. Next, just let them come up to you. Don’t try to bring them closer to you, just wait for them to feel relaxed enough to explore and hang out with you. Also be gentle and speak softly around them, as loud or sudden noises can startle them.
Don't pick them up unless needed
Although you will need to practice picking up and holding your rabbit whenever needed, you should try to keep it at a minimum. Most rabbits hate being held, because it feels like they are being trapped. Try not to pick up your rabbit often, hold them only when trimming their nails or carrying them to a safe place.Â
Treats
Another way how to build a bond with your rabbit is by giving them treats. The rabbit will associate you with good things when you feed them their favorite foods. You can get them treats from the pet store, or buy some fruits for them. However, you do not want to feed them too many sweets because it’s not good for them.
Toys
You can also give them toys to play with. Playing with them and their toys are a great way to bond with your bunny. Some rabbit toys even allow them to use their brain to figure things out, or get treats out of the toy. You can buy toys at the pet store, or even make some yourself.
Â
Hiding Spaces
When playing with your rabbit, make sure there is a clear path for them to run away if they want to be by themselves. Try not to corner your rabbit or tower over them, since that will make them feel threatened. Also give them a place to hide and relax. It can be as simple as an old box with a hole cut into it. You can make a hiding place yourself or buy one at a pet store.
By following all these tips, you and your rabbit will be on your way to being comfortable and relaxed around each other. Make sure to be consistent with training and paying attention to your rabbit’s body behaviors to see how they’re feeling. Training your bunny this way will get them to be excited to spend time with you.
