Ways to Exercise your Rabbit

In order to lead healthy lives, house rabbits should have at least three hours of exercise – whether that is letting them run around in the backyard, or roaming around the house- but the more exercise the better. There are several ways to exercise your bunny, and whatever method you use, you can be sure that your rabbit will love it.

Backyard

One of the easiest ways of letting your rabbit exercise is letting them run around a backyard. First, make sure that any grass there is not treated with chemicals that are harmful to rabbits. Remove anything that could be dangerous for your rabbit to come in contact with. Then, bring your bunny outside. You can even bring their cage out with them so that they can have access to water and food. Or you could have a separate hutch and playpen outside for them to relax in.

Your bunny will love being free in nature and fresh air. If the backyard is safe enough, you can even let them stay outside as long as they want. Just be sure to keep an eye on them as they play.

Indoor Exercise

If you don’t have a backyard or don’t want to have your rabbit outside, there are two ways to have your bunny exercise indoors: using a playpen, and free roam.

Playpen

When getting a playpen, make sure it is large enough. At the least it should be three to four times their body length. You can even connect the playpen to their cage so that they can have access to food and water. Put in a few toys and little hiding spots into the playpen to make them feel more at home. Using a playpen is great especially if you can’t be with your rabbit all day. Just make sure that the connections are secure, as rabbits are curious and will escape if they find a hole!

Free Roam

Before you let your bunny roam freely in your house, clear up anything on the floor and put away anything you don’t want to be chewed on. You can put up gates too if you don’t want your rabbit to go somewhere else, and close doors to rooms. Just like in a playpen, you can leave out fun toys for it to play with, hide treats around to enhance their curiosity, and put out hiding holes and tunnels.

Spending Time with Them

You can also exercise your rabbit by being with them and training them. Spend time with it by playing with their toys, and sitting down by them so that they can explore. You can train your rabbit to do different things, like running around in a circle, to come to you when called, high five, and so many other fun commands.

Walking your Rabbit

Another idea is to take them on a walk. Start out by getting a little harness that will fit them without it being too loose. Practice walking around in the house until your rabbit gets used to it. Encourage them and give them some treats so that they can associate the harness and leash with a positive experience. Finally, go outside and walk your bunny!

All of these ways, and others, will ensure that your bunny is getting enough exercise and stimulation. They will be happy and excited to get a chance to stretch their legs, run, and play with their toys. Exercising your rabbit is important so that your pet can broaden their curiosity, spend time with you, and live its healthiest life.
